Ophthalmic needle-holders are used during a surgical operation to hold the needle, also to grab the wires without cutting them, and to allow its precise and secured manipulation during the intervention.

Moria, a company that has been manufacturing ophthalmic surgery instruments for more than 200 years, offers a wide range of ophthalmic needle-holders, designed to hold and make different kinds of sutures.

When to use a surgical needle-holder ?

The needle-holder, also known as a needle driver, is used during a surgical intervention for two main purposes: to hold and to push the suturing needle to make the suture.

In eye surgery, the needle-holder is commonly used during cataract surgery, corneal interventions, eyelids, strabismus, dacryocystorhinostomy and oculoplasty.

How to choose a needle-holder ?

Some of the needle-holders’ jaws are smooth, while others are serrated. Serrated jaws hold the needle better, but they tend to slightly perforate the suture during the intervention. Smooth jaws do not perforate the needle, which makes them an ideal choice for many types of ophthalmic surgeries.

In addition of jaws design, choice of a needle-holder also depends on the type of sutures that surgeons use during the ophthalmic intervention: monofilament sutures or braided multifilament sutures.
